Second Life is a realistic world where avatars animated representations for its more than 850,000 players interact. Avatars buy islands on which to build homes or businesses, and sell one another everything from homes designed by Adobe Photoshop or Gimp (freeware) to virtual sneakers.
It has a currency of its own which has a exchange rate like any other country. The only currency it exchanges directly is US Dollars. The virtual currency of SecondLife (SL) is known as Linden Dollors (L$) and the exchange rate for every one USD ($1) you get 276 Linden Dollors (L$276).
It was established in 2002 by San Francisco based software company Linden Lab. It is based on fully customizable avatars evolving in a virtual 3D space and and incorporates a variety social networking tools.
Users, called residents or citizens, create an alter ego and enter the scene as mere standard creatures. They then get to alter their avatar according to their wishes and preferences. In order to do so they have to pay or get freebies to make changes their avatar with Linden Dollars.
